The choice to buy an electronic battery, instead of a classic battery, depends mainly on external factors: for example, it may be the right choice if you live in an apartment and your neighbors are particularly intolerant! 😉

An electronic drum set allows you to play freely without worrying about your surroundings. Simply adjust the volume of the instrument, or connect the headphones, and you’re done!

But beyond your neighbours (who don’t know how to appreciate your artistic skills), to make the right choice among the many models, you need to specify the elements that make up an electronic drum kit.

That’s why we’ve decided to put our experience in the field at your disposal and give you the necessary guidelines for your purchase!

Electronic drums: the key elements for your choice

Would you like to buy your own battery but don’t know how to get around? Don’t worry, we’ll help you make the right choice for you.

First of all, the electronic drum kit offers many advantages over the classic version. It’s lighter and takes up less space, so if you decide to carry it, it’s much easier to do. You can also decide to play it at any time of the day or night, thanks to the possibility to turn down the volume and put on the headphones: finally no one can stop you when, at 2 a.m., you want to practice!

But let’s come to the point and see what are the important elements to choose the electronic drum kit. For simplicity’s sake, we’ve summarized them in a few key points.

Types of pads

The pads are divided into two types:

  • for tom/snare drum use
  • for flat use.

In the first case, the pads for use tom / snare, you can distinguish four categories including rubber pads, Mesh, TCS and equipped with mylar skins. In the case of flat pads, we can identify two categories: rubber and metal.

That said, for each pad there are variables related to natural sound, the noise you hear outside the headphones when you tap the stick on the surface, the response times and the sensations you get when you play.

For example, Mesh pads are quieter than TCS pads. In both cases, the touch response and feel they convey are very high. On the contrary, pads with traditional skins may seem to you the best choice, but in the long run you will realize that an electronic set can not mount the same skins as an acoustic set.

There are models of exercise pads, such as the one designed by Vic Firth, made with a rubber surface that allows you to perform exercises in silence.

The sound module

Then we come to the choice of the sound module. If you want to ensure a high level of sound for your performances, it is important to choose a quality sound module. Electronic drum manufacturers sell this component both as a single item and as an accessory already included in the default kit.

Our advice is to use the sound module included in the set you want to buy. Especially if you’re new to sound, you could initially rely on the one provided in the kit, so you can be sure that the quality is in line with that of the pads. You can always choose to change it later.

What are the characteristics of a sound module?

  • The quality of the inputs for the pads;
  • The sounds you can combine to create your own sound library;
  • Headphone inputs

Dimensions of the drum set

And here we are at the last key element in the choice of the electronic battery: the size of the set. Deciding to buy a larger model and think about it compared to a smaller and lighter one depends on your needs.

If you’re going to play drums in a spacious studio, you can focus on a larger model. Otherwise, you won’t find it hard to find an electronic drum kit that’s easy to place and carry in any artistic context.
